Catherine & Laura's walking tour reveals  a version of  La Roma that you could never find on your own.

Want to get straight to the cosmopolitan heartbeat of Mexico City? The The New York Times  is raving about?

Google maps & shopping blogs won't even scrape the surface!  We are here to take you to Mexico's coolest & off-the-radar hotspots - 100% tailored to your interests.

We love La Roma! It's Mexico City's slighty wacky equivalent of Brooklyn, East London, or the Parisian Left Bank.

Drop yourself into some knockout Instagram shots!

Distinguish yourself from those visitors who think Mexico is a place where you go to drink frozen margaritas from plastic cups.

We are not beige, and neither are you!

Laura and Catherine are La Roma locals who stay on top of what's fresh and exciting.

Stylewalk MX Director, Laura, personally started the La Roma walking tours. The concept was a first for Mexico City.

Catherine has travelled and worked all over, so she brings a unique world-view to the magic that is La Roma. She loves meeting people and opening doors to the hidden charms of the neighbourhood.

She has a great radar for tuning into people's interests and personality, and making their day come alive. When she is not on tour or working on business projects, you’ll find her taste-testing the menu at any of the countless new eateries nearby!

Laura's introduction to La Roma was one of the best walking tours I've had in any city.

Often referred to as the Soho of Mexico, La Roma is an eclectic mix of colonial history, upbeat bohemia, new money, and the fresh edge of street cool.

When the New York Times named Mexico City as THE #1 world travel destination in 2016, they said 'it hit a sweet spot'. Standing in the mass crowds of Centro Histórico, or sweating in the queue at the Frida Kahlo museum, however, you would be forgiven for wondering where on earth that sweet spot is.  Enter La Roma : the contemporary face of fresh, loveable, Mexico.

We navigate you through a quirky boutiques, chic galleries, street art and old school taco shops.

A vibrant collision of colonial decay, contemporary fashion, underground chic, food obsession, and high-end development, La Roma is Mexico City's hidden treasure.

Mexican design has made  it the global design capital for 2018

There is a catch though...

It's just not that easy getting to the good stuff. The unique rooftop ateliers, backstreet shops, and boutiques with no signage, are the real pulse of this neighbourhood. Without them, La Roma would be just another suburb.

The most common comment our guests tell us is:   "I never would have found this on my own!”

We love La Roma. We don't want you to believe you've seen it, when you drive by on the bus.

We also don't want you to wander around for hours and hours, wondering what all the fuss is about. That's why we developed this tour.

People may wonder whether or not this kind of tour is superfluous and couldn't be done independently....A good analogy might be trying to read Shakespeare entirely on your own or alongside a talented professor. It's better with a guide!

When you make a booking, we send you a checklist of interests and possibilities to find out what tickles your fancy. We then design your tour to meet this wishlist - always with the option of adapting the program along the way and staying open to the spontaneity of moment!

Don't worry.
You can be extremely uncool,
aging, and unstylish,
AND take the La Roma hipster tour!

You'll have a choice of seeing the latest from contemporary Mexican designers, be it: fashion, ceramics, zines, jewellery, kitchenware, shoes, or accessories. Then there's private art galleries and artists' studios, interiors in restaurants cafes & bars that catch our eye, one-off furniture pieces and newly restored decorative creations made by local interior designers.

If you are a foodie, we can point you to fresh contemporary Mexican dining options or pop in for a quesadilla at trusted local street food kiosk. Stop for a mezcal, espresso, or Baja California wine.

special obsession

for something,

kitsch fridge magnets

La Roma is a beautifully compact area of modern urban talent, old fashioned Mexican culture & random street oddities.

Oddly enough, not many places have signs or advertising however.

The most common comment our visitors tell us is: How on earth did you find this place ?!

My family and I learned interesting information from an insider's perspective that we never would have known. The district is changing so quickly and there are no signs, so if you want to know where the cool spots are, Laura will take you there.

Once home to Mexico City's aristocratic elite, La Roma's regal past now peeks outs from aging architraves and refurbished powder rooms.

History happily holds hands with contemporary in La Roma.

La Roma has functioned as a creative hub for writers, intellectuals, artists and musicians since the 1950s. Whilst once the muse of American beat poets, Luis Buñuel, Fidel Castro, and contemporary pianist Michael Nyman, La Roma was originally an elite sanctuary for Mexico’s 19th century political & business players.

This neighbourhood has survived several significant milestones in Mexican history, including the massive 1985 earthquake and a phase in which its name was synonymous with crime, drugs and prostitution. However, like most areas that have experienced a born-again-revival through urban development, La Roma's former periods of social demise are now barely visible.

Named a ‘magic district’ by the Mexican government, La Roma is now home to a new wave of young entrepreneurs, designers & freelancers and nouveau riche, who harmoniously live side by side the mixed demographic local families who have been property owners since year dot.

La Roma is the perfect film set,  where modern life plays out against a Fellini-esque neo-classical backdrop

Catherine has a thorough knowledge of this cool area and everyone we met at little boutiques, galleries, cafes and shops on our walk showed their affection for her. She has a real knowledge and love of this neighbourhood.

Laura was wonderful. She was able to give us a more intimate experience of understanding Mexico City, La Roma and La Condesa . I would start your trip with her walking tours (we did two!), so as to get your bearings and have recommendations for the rest of your trip.

Clients Mario & Patrick - what can we say.....we LOVE your style!

    2. Check out our partner hotel list. It is drawn from three years of feedback from Stylewalk clients.

Where you stay in Mexico City can make a HUGE difference to your stay.  Many people think the Frida Kahlo neighbourhood of Coyoacan is the epi-center of CDMX. Logistically speaking, nothing could be further from the truth!  We have partnered with the bnbs and hotels that our tour guests consider to be fantastic Mexico City accomodation options - be it for mid or upscale budgets.

.3.  We don't accept any third party commissions from any restaurants or shops.

We are travellers too and have been on tours in foreign parts of the world where it is obvious that the guide in cohoots with a shop or restaurant for tourist patronage. The experience is horrid. We don't want to be on tours like that so accordingly we only work with guides who are 100% free of shams and paybacks . Read more here...

by Vera Latino on Hipster Roma Walking Tour

When traveling to new cities, I never go the organized tour route, and prefer to look up all the interesting places to check out - to me, that's half the fun of traveling! It also seems like most tour guides are a one-size-fits-all, without much of a personality or unique point of view.I recently traveled to Mexico City for business and had an extra day to explore the city. CDMX is huge (even for someone from LA!) and there is so much to see. I wanted to maximize my day and quickly researched tours, deciding on a 6-hour personal tour with StylewalkMX. What I found most appealing was the customization and vibe I got from the website, which seemed like a good fit for someone like me who wanted to see the major sights, get a feel for the rich culture, and just as important, eating & shopping! While it was more expensive than a canned group tour, it was definitely worth it in my opinion - I was able to customize what I wanted to see, there was a private driver, escorted walking tours, and get access to restaurants/galleries that are hard to get.The second leg of the tour was the "Hipster La Roma" tour with Laura. The La Romaarea is dope, with a lot of boutiques, galleries, coffee shops. Yes, it's very hipster, but I love how it's all still got a very local vibe. La Roma reminds me of Silverlake in LA, Abboy Kinney (5 years ago), Brooklyn (5 years ago), Marais, Shoreditch, etc. Check out the Goop's mini- guide of Mexico City, turns out the restaurant Laura was able to snag reservations for, El Parnita, is also featured. The tour with Laura was awesome! We explored all these cool shops, galleries, and restaurants, many of which are tucked away down driveways behind gates where you have to be buzzed in. It was like having your best friend show you all their secret haunts - I loved it and totally recommend this tour!

by Dan G - Dallas, Texas USA on Hipster Roma Walking Tour

Highly recommend this company mainly because it's an opportunity to do something a little different when it comes to a 'tour'. Laura our guide (and owner) was so knowledgeable about the neighborhood and geared our tour to our specific interests. Even during the tour she adjusted what we saw based on shops/cafes/architecture/galleries we got excited about. Beyond Laura's knowledge of the neighborhood, she knew the proprietors of the businesses gaining us access to sites not possible on our own.

It was a pleasure to take you out and give you a fresh way of experiencing the cool that is Mexico City. Being local makes a big difference to us, both in terms of what we can show you and knowing how to get in!!! I loved sharing these hidden treasures so I am super glad you appreciated them!

    Happy travels!
