La Juarez, as an upcoming star & international coolhunter muse, is not brash or forthcoming. That's one of the things that makes the area so attractive. It's not touristy or obvious.

It also means that unless you know where to look, you can easily miss things altogether.

Our job is to navigate you direct to local design hotspots, so you are not left wandering the back streets wondering what all the fuss is about.

Camille, our host for a carefully curated art and architecture tour of Roma, was a delight. As we wove our way through the area, it was clear she knew many people in the community, and this was reflected in amazing insider access at many of the stops on our tour. We saw beautiful buildings and were taken behind the scenes at one of the finest art galleries in the city. She even let us know about an event happening that we never would have heard about on our own - it ended up being one of the highlights of our entire trip! She went far above and beyond days after our tour was over to make sure we were taken care of.

excellent guide la roma walking tour

We really had an wonderful 3 hours and covered places we could never have discovered just from guide books or googling. In addition Camille is knowledgeable about the history, politics and environmental factors (earthquakes, water issues etc) that have impacted area; that gave us extra perspective on the area and its inhabitants, and Mexico City as a whole over the last century plus.

Laura was very committed to making sure we saw the area in a way that would be meaningful to us and had an enjoyable time.

 WHY LA JUAREZ?

Mexico City is massive and every neighborhood has a unique vibe , but La Juarez and La Roma, are where style is not pretentious, egotistical, or painfully self conscious.

best thing to do in mexico city

La Juarez and La Roma both have their roots strongly anchored in colonial history, upbeat bohemia, new money, and the fresh edge of street cool. upbeat bohemia, new money, and the fresh edge of street cool. While all the hype has been focused on La Roma in the last five years, La Juarez has been slowly, but surely, outshining her from the wings. As these areas still have affordable pockets mixed into the gentrification, these low profile buildings are the perfect seeding grounds for emerging artists and designers in which to base themselves.

THE PULSE OF MEXICO'S DESIGN CAPITAL

Once home to Mexico City's aristocratic elite, La Roma and La Juarez both have a regal past. Its aging architraves and are now inhabited by refurbished showrooms, basement workshops, and the random speakeasy.

La Roma has functioned as a creative hub for writers, intellectuals, artists and musicians since the 1950s. Whilst once the muse of American beat poets, Luis Buñuel, Fidel Castro, and contemporary pianist Michael Nyman, La Roma was originally an elite sanctuary for Mexico’s 19th century political & business players.

This neighborhood has survived several significant milestones in Mexican history, including the massive 1985 earthquake and a phase in which its name was synonymous with crime, drugs and prostitution. However, like most areas that have experienced a born-again-revival through urban development, La Roma's former periods of social demise are now barely visible.

Named a ‘magic district’ by the Mexican government, La Roma is now home to a new wave of young entrepreneurs, designers & freelancers and nouveau riche, who harmoniously live side by side the mixed demographic local families who have been property owners since year dot.

When the New York Times named Mexico City as THE #1 world travel destination way back in 2016, they said 'it hit a sweet spot'. Since then Mexico City has grow a solid international reputation as an urbane, progressive, cosmopolitan city.

BUT.....standing in the mass crowds of Centro Histórico, or sweating in the queue at the Frida Kahlo museum, however, you would be forgiven for wondering where on earth that sweet spot is.

A vibrant collision of colonial decay, contemporary fashion, underground chic, food obsession, and high-end development, La Juarez is Mexico City's hidden treasure.

Our job is to stay on top of what can't be seen from the street, and who is doing what and where. Let us do the research for you!

The sister suburbs of La Roma & La Juarez represent the contemporary face of fresh, loveable, Mexico.

What was so impressive was (sic...our guide's) the knowledge of the area regarding the history, architecture, and geography. She is charming and is not afraid to use that charm to have gallery owners open their doors off hours, get craftsman to discuss their trade or get locals to open their doors to show you their private spaces.

If you want to have an immediate friend in Mexico City who will share their secrets with you, then join Laura for a walk. The conversations, the coffee, food and time spent will be memorable.

This is my second (Roma) tour and our guide did not disappoint. Her knowledge of the history of the neighborhood is impressive! Especially love all the off the beaten path boutiques, restaurants, galleries etc that she shows you. Some of them don't even have signs on them so you would walk right by if she wasn't with you! She also gave great recommendations on how to spend the rest of our time in CDMX on our visit. Highly recommend her tours!!!!

While going to the different museums and neighborhoods of Mexico City was incredibly interesting, the group of 4 I went on the Stylewalk MX tour with all agreed it was our favorite trip experience.

The tour itself was a great balance of educational and fun (plus getting to use spray paint at the end was very cool). Awesome way to explore Mexico City through a unique lens.

Should also note our experience was so positive largely because of our tour guide, Claudio Remix, and I would highly recommend trying to get him if you can.

Laura took us all around La Roma, from upscale art galleries to craft collectives. Many of these places we would never have found on our own. There were actual changing rooms in the shops, so my daughters bought some clothing which they would not have been comfortable purchasing from a street stall. We also saw some street art and architecture and got in some social history of the area. It was a wonderful opportunity to wander around an area we would not otherwise have found. Additionally, it was a great break from the museums and other history-oriented activities we engaged in during most of our trip.

When traveling to new cities, I never go the organized tour route, and prefer to look up all the interesting places to check out - to me, that's half the fun of traveling! It also seems like most tour guides are a one-size-fits-all, without much of a personality or unique point of view.

I recently traveled to Mexico City for business and had an extra day to explore the city. CDMX is huge (even for someone from LA!) and there is so much to see. I wanted to maximize my day and quickly researched tours, deciding on a 6-hour personal tour with StylewalkMX. What I found most appealing was the customization and vibe I got from the website, which seemed like a good fit for someone like me who wanted to see the major sights, get a feel for the rich culture, and just as important, eating & shopping! While it was more expensive than a canned group tour, it was definitely worth it in my opinion - I was able to customize what I wanted to see, there was a private driver, escorted walking tours, and get access to restaurants/galleries that are hard to get.

The second leg of the tour was the "Hipster La Roma" tour with Laura. The La Romaarea is dope, with a lot of boutiques, galleries, coffee shops. Yes, it's very hipster, but I love how it's all still got a very local vibe. La Roma reminds me of Silverlake in LA, Abboy Kinney (5 years ago), Brooklyn (5 years ago), Marais, Shoreditch, etc. Check out the Goop's mini- guide of Mexico City, turns out the restaurant Laura was able to snag reservations for, El Parnita, is also featured.

The tour with Laura was awesome! We explored all these cool shops, galleries, and restaurants, many of which are tucked away down driveways behind gates where you have to be buzzed in. It was like having your best friend show you all their secret haunts - I loved it and totally recommend this tour!

We did 2 Stylewalk tours and loved them both! We did a walking tour of La Roma and discovered so many fun shops and galleries that we would have never known existed! We also did a walking tour of street art and had so much fun seeing a different side of the historic center. I'd recommend them both!

I love Roma Norte even more after going on Laura's tour. It's great to just walk around and experience the area on your own, but I got a much better appreciation with all of the knowledge and insight that Laura provides. Learning about the history, architecture, and street art was a lot of fun. I've actually been on her tour twice now and each time Laura took us to some different places behind closed doors that you would never know about if you were just strolling around on your own. This tour is a must-do for a trip to the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City.

We took a StyleWalk Mx tour with Laura in late March, 2017. Laura is very knowledgeable of the architecture and designs of Mexico. She was very responsive in setting up the tour of the Roma area. She also had a quick chat with us before we got started, just to make sure the tour was tailored to the elements that we were most interested in (e.g. architecture, food, design, jewelry, etc.). It was wonderful to see how much she enjoys Mexico City, after travelling the world and deciding to stay in the city. Laura took us behind the scenes of some design, painting and jewelry studios, which are not obvious when walking down the streets of La Roma. She knows a lot of people in the area, and was able to take us to some eclectic and very interesting design studios. Although we were not much into shopping, those travelers that enjoy browsing for unique design gifts would be very pleased with the various studios she can show you. Although the tour was somewhat at a slower pace than we were used to, we did get a very good impression of the La Roma area we did see on the tour. I would recommend this as a tour to take which covers areas that would not be covered in the mainstream offered tours of the city. We really enjoyed our time on this tour!!

Highly recommend this company mainly because it's an opportunity to do something a little different when it comes to a 'tour'. Laura our guide (and owner) was so knowledgeable about the neighborhood and geared our tour to our specific interests. Even during the tour she adjusted what we saw based on shops/cafes/architecture/galleries we got excited about. Beyond Laura's knowledge of the neighborhood, she knew the proprietors of the businesses gaining us access to sites not possible on our own.

It was a pleasure to take you out and give you a fresh way of experiencing the cool that is Mexico City. Being local makes a big difference to us, both in terms of what we can show you and knowing how to get in!!! I loved sharing these hidden treasures so I am super glad you appreciated them!

Happy travels!
